Bendix/King KR 87 ADF system ver 1.0

Bendix/King description:
Featuring an all-new appearance, the KR 87 maintains its reputation for offering
superb dependability. This compact TSO’d unit gives you accurate
bearing-to-station in the 200 kHz to 1799 kHz frequency range, complete with
ADF, ANT and BFO tuning modes, plus audio output for station identification and
monitoring AM broadcasts.

The KR 87’s advanced "coherent detection" design rejects unwanted frequency
noise and achieves much greater range while remaining less susceptible to engine
noise, static and atmospheric interference.

Its "flip-flop" frequency display allows you to switch between pre-selected
standby and active frequencies with the press of a button. And both frequencies
are stored in a non-volatile memory circuit, meaning you don’t have to worry
about battery power.

Outstanding Presentation
In the cockpit, you want instrumentation that’s easy to read and responsive to
your touch. Incorporating proven display technology and enhanced ergonomics, our
KR 87 –and the entire line of Silver Crown panel-mounted avionics –deliver
exactly what you want. Now, the KR 87 is easier than ever to use, especially at
night.

A Two - Way Timer
For either flight time or elapsed time, you simply can’t beat the KR 87’s
internal timer. As an automatic flight timer, it’s a real aid for fuel
management, dead reckoning on long legs and other navigation functions, up to 59
hours and 59 minutes. And it can be checked any time during a flight by pressing
the FLT/ET button. The elapsed time function provides you with a "stopwatch"
perfect for timing a holding pattern, a nonprecision approach or an individual
trip leg. It can be programmed to clock forward from :00, or to count down from
any preset time interval up to 59 minutes and 59 seconds.

Description:
This gauge is a ADF radio for receiving signals of NDB stations, very close to
the real KR 87 instrument.
It provides the traditional FS ADF (NDB) features and three timers: Flight time,
elapsed time count up and elapsed time count down.
As the original instrument this gauge has a built-in frequency pre-selection and
a "flip-flop" button for swapping the standby frequency with the frequency in
use. This feature is first time shown in a freeware ADF gauge for the FS!

The buttons and knobs:
See the picture ExplKR87.bmp which gives an overview of the functions.

The power knob on the lower right side switches the radio on and off. When
power is on and clicking again, the ADF ident mode is activated. This interacts
with the Bendix/King audio selector panel KMA 26 of this package and toggles
the ADF sound of the Morse ident code on and off if the frequency in use
transmits a NBD signal. Powering the radio off will reset all timers.
You can have the power switch always set on and use a central avionic circuit
switch in your main panel to set the power of ALL radios in this package.

The ADF (AUTOMATIC DIRECTION FINDER) button – Use the ADF mode ("in" position by
default) for navigation. Use the ANT (Antenna) mode ("out" position) for
improved audio reception. In "ANT mode" the needle of the ADF instrument turns in
the 90° position and stays there until "ADF mode" is set again. Clicking this
button either shows the "ADF"- or the "ANT"-indicator in the display on the left.

The BFO (BEAT FREQUENCY OSCILLATOR) button - This is used in some countries
other than the U.S. to allow the Morse code identifier to be heard on
unmodulated stations. This button has no effect in FS. Clicking this button
toggles the "BFO"-indicator in the middle of the display on or off.

The FRQ button with the <--> symbol in the middle swaps the ADF frequency from
standby to frequency in use. In this mode only the standby frequency can be
changed. If one of the timers is displayed, the "FRQ"-indicator and the standby
frequency are not shown - however it stays in memory and can be called back by
pressing FRQ button again.

The FLT/ET (FLIGHT TIMER/ELAPSED TIMER) button – Use this button to select
flight time (FLT) or elapsed time (ET). Clicking this button brings up the
flight time display. Clicking again shows the elapsed time display. To close the
timer display just click on the FRQ button.
Learn more about using the timers in the description below.

The SET/RST (SET/RESET) BUTTON – Use this button to set and reset the elapsed
timer.

The selector knob on the right side has two parts: A large knob and a small
knob. The large outer knob tunes the 100’s and the 1000’s, up to 1699. The small
inner knob has two functions. When "pushed in" it tunes the 10's. Clicking in
the center of the inner knob "pulls out" the small knob and then tunes the 1's.
In FREQ mode (no timer is displayed) the standby frequency will be changed. If
in FLT or ET mode (timer is displayed) the selector knobs will change the
frequency in use directly.

How to use the built-in timers
The flight time:
The first click on the FLT/ET button displays the flight time. The FLT timer
starts automatically from :00 everytime when the power knob is turned from OFF
to ON and counts to 59 hours, :59 minutes and :59 seconds.

The count up timer:
The second click on the FLT/ET button displays the count up elapsed timer. As
with the FLT timer the count up ET starts automatically from :00 everytime when
the power knob is turned from OFF to ON and counts to 59 hours, :59 minutes and
:59 seconds. You can reset the count up ET to :00 anytime by clicking the
SET/RST button. After resetting the ET it counts up again immediately.

The count down timer:
Click the FLT/ET button to display the ET mode and the "ET"-indicator is shown.
Click the SET/RST button twice to activate the ET set mode. In this mode you see
the digits 00:00 (minutes and seconds) and a blinking "ET"-indicator.
With the large outer selector knob you can set the minutes up to 59. The smaller
inner selector knob sets the seconds up to :59.
Click the SET/RST button to start the count down timer.
While the count down timer is running it can be stopped at any time by clicking
the SET/RST button. This automatically starts the count up ET again.
When the count down timer expires, the digits 00:00 will be displayed and you
will hear an aural signal for 15 seconds. After this time the count up ET will
start automatically.
The 00:00 ET display and the beeping signal can be interrupted by clicking the
SET/RST button.
